Plant a Flower Day: Easier said than done.

I remember growing up with my mom and dad, often plucking things from the garden before their ripened time.  Birds, scavengers, neighbors, anything could happen to that raspberry patch in the time between now, the pinkish tart moments before theft, and the sweetened darker shades to come in two days from now. Always rushing to pick something but always knowing you're too rushed to ever enjoy it naturally, with patience, and care.

Perhaps the rush of the blue-collar worker? I'm not entirely sure, the 98% they say...

I have been wanting a garden for some time.  Outside of the apartment complex, just a few feet from the dog park, and sandwiched by the poison ivy and metal-o-matic plant, lies small box to call our own.  We pay more than $50 for the space and usually fight off neighbors who unknowingly plant over your dirt mounds in the early spring. We wait, we start small seedlings at home, and then we wait for the perfect time to transplant our clearly - unmistakable - babies.

Strawberries, kale, peppers, lettuce - the easiest thing to use in a space and pluck over and over.  Basil, herbs like lemon grass and rosemary, sage and peppermint; the perfect additions to marinades and water.  Cucumbers and melons are cumbersome, but we usually move them to the unused spaces by the sunflowers and extra berry bushes we hope to see sprout.

Most of the gravel, dogs, weeds and homeless pluck the berries before you get them.  Your garden goes unguarded at night to the crawlers of the lower than blue collar class, or to those students or neighbors that don't care, and your left with a garden you never see much from. The gardening has to become a meditation and lesson, a parenting joy and a goal for a future space to call my own.

If you have space, use it. If you can - grow it. Help avoid mowing the lawn by having a community garden. The city life has taught me to be humble.

This time last spring we were celebrating my MIL's move to England and creating a Sherlock Holmes calendar for her to hang in her English cottage.  The kids loved getting into character and now dad is working on a soundtrack to the newest rendition of a Stephen King - Sherlock Favorite! Keep your eyes peeled for more...
