Oregon Retreat : Review of an adventure in the mountains

Recently I had the amazing honor of joining a long-time client for a personal birthday celebration and psychic retreat. As a life coach, psychologist and also someone who dabbles in the paranormal, I meet a lot of great clients through the years that grow into friendships.  Judy and her family were no exception and my husband and I both visited OR for the first time, to join her at a wonderful retreat in the mountains.

Medford, OR is a medium sized town that is surrounded on all sides by mountains that kiss the horizon line. Our trip from Minneapolis to LA and then from LA into Medford had us arriving by Bombardier plane late in the evening; no views.  When we awoke the next morning, we were greeted by an amazing breakfast buffet and sunshine peeking over the mountain tops... it was beautiful.

The first half of our week in Oregon was spent exploring the landscape and countryside. We enjoyed lunch in Ashland nearby and took a wild ride down the Rogue River on the Hellboat Excursions.  The boat ride included waves of water splashing over the boat as you coasted through the valleys and mountains towards our dinner hideaway in the woods.  Eagles soared overhead, the sunshine dried our wet clothes just as the boat captain would whip a 360 and drench us all in laughter and waves once again. Dinner was a southern comfort meal of biscuits, lemonade, tea, coleslaw, chicken and the fixings.

Wooden tables, canopy, nature all around you and just a small group of people dining family style.  The staff, the company, the view was all breath-taking; I simply couldn't snap enough photos.

The drive into the mountains for Brandon and I to climb Roxy Ann Peak was full of flowers, new trees that seemed to speak out to me and landscape that was all unseen to my eyes. It was a refreshing adventure with my partner in crime for us to sweat, talk, laugh and explore together.

A few days later, we took our adventures to the caves in northern Oregon and through the Redwood forest.  At every turn there seemed to be a new tree, a century-old personality speaking out, greeting you.  Brandon and I fought the urge to stop at every curb-side pullover and well, we might have stopped at most of them.  Waterfalls, Redwood trees, smoke over the mountains... we wanted to blast Lord of the Rings at full volume. It was magical.

After hours of almost-scary driving through winding, narrow roads in the mountainside, the highway dumps you off into California.  The trees part to a small town and suddenly the mountains become cliff-sides and the once endless horizon of green trees becomes a blue ocean.  The clouds were billowed and fat that afternoon.  Brandon and I smiled from ear to ear as we parked the car at a lookout point.  A small lighthouse in the distance, seagulls flying overhead, the waves crashing below us.  It makes you feel like a school kid again; giddy and hopeful.

We asked some locals for the best spot to eat and found our way to a diner on the docks. We nibbled on fresh bisque, buttered rolls, fried catch and greasy fries. After our dinner, we took off our shoes, unbuckled the top button of our pants and walked out into the sunset where the water met our toes.  It was colder than the locals might enjoy, a brisk 67 or so with a chilly wind, but being from Minnesota, we welcomed the cold.  The water and sand melted between our toes, our cheeks hurt from smiling all day and every inch of my being was filled with gratitude. The ocean does that.

The remainder of the trip was spent sight-seeing and shopping, celebrating and relaxing.  The flight home allowed for a window seat into Seattle that provided the perfect view of Mount Rainier. We missed our little ones, but the week adventure was something we needed.  New friends, new sights, time alone and Mother Nature heals.
