Fat Tuesday - We make King Cake
During Mardi Gras, I have lots of fun doing Voodoo spell work and divination but also I celebrate with homemade king cake! Nothing soothes the cannibal *cough* Carnival soul, like a King Cake made from scratch (baby included!)
The sweet cake is moist and reminiscent of a yellow butter cake, sweet crescent roll and sometimes rolled with a flaky dough-like batter. Honey, sugar, and decorated with cream cheese frosting in the famous purple, green and gold shades. A small toy baby is inserted in the completed cake and whomever gets the slice with a baby, is said to be responsible for bringing the King Cake the following year!
Do you integrate any Mardi Gras traditions into your life?
A quick recipe for this fun dessert can include a can of Pillsbury crescent rolls and your favorite cream cheese. Take some slivered nuts (I adore almonds and dates) crushed with some creamed cheese or a pre-made honey/walnut spread (Nutella even) dalloped onto the dough. Wrap around, dust with sugar, bake as usual and decorate with colored sugar or glazed icing!
