Summer Solstice : How to create positive energy
If you stem from a strict, rigid, objective background or have been raised with a heavy religious influence that is more Christian-heavy, spirituality might be a difficult thing to 'practice'. It may not be hard to understand, define and even experience spirituality but practicing it... therein lies the beast. First, one must define their own spirituality (something unique, intimate, subjective to each person). Next a person must sort out their mind in order to identify their content of spirituality. What triggers the euphoria? Does doing yoga barefoot in the morning bring you closer to your God? Is it drinking the right brand Kombucha, doing chakra exercises and mantras on the right day do it? When you 'quiet your mind' do you go to that one mountain top you saw in high school that nearly brought you to your knees with awe?
Each person has their own intricate process by which they explore and experience their own spirituality but we do know that one's behaviors do change the mind. Science can explore and measure the changes in body and thought when someone meditates or prays. The power of belief, faith, mind control and clarity have proven health benefits but the ROAD TO GET THERE, the vacant space that might only be filled with a Robert Frost exert, is the hard part. What behaviors, what actions, does someone DO to reach that type of mind control, to experience that health-benefiting peace of mind, to connect with God? For me, it has been a constant research project of my own ancestry to explore what 'speaks to me' and to just enjoy learning what works and what does not. Too vague? Let's get specific...
I'm part Sinti, Cherokee, Welch, Irish and raised by a dad who was Southern Baptist, a mom who was a Pagan gypsy naturalist and later influenced by a sister that identified as Wiccan. Living in a very haunted home, traveling with other families, visiting many churches, growing up around psychic conventions and drum circles and who was taught that the garden is just as connected to us as we are to it. This heavily influences me with what I find to be spiritually positive and therefore my guides (which I've found through self-therapy and hypnosis) are mixed, my practices are mixed and finding a 'church' or a 'Bible' that lets me FEEL as though I am doing it RIGHT does not exist. You simply feel as you go, love always and learn as much as possible.
With that, I'm making sure to use this upcoming Solstice and New Moon accordingly; the moon is so important to my body and where I am at in the world. A New Moon, like a farmer's almanac might explain (or Ashley illustrates so well in her blog here), is the best time to plant your seeds. The soil is most fertile, wet, and perfect for planting! The Moon and gravity play a mathematical dance of waves and tides and the water rises to the surface of the soil to nourish and cleanse the baby seeds. It's beautiful. The same thing happens in my mind and being that the Summer Solstice is the longest day in the year, where we have the most light (aka positive working Sun energy) this day is meant to be spent cleaning, celebrating, prepping for those new seeds of intent. Getting out in the sun, pulling weeds (which I will actually go out and do but also do in my mind during my daily sit/coffee/think time), laughing with family and cleaning my environment. Taking a hot bath, shaving my legs, prepping for what I want to PLANT on the New Moon come this Friday. Being THANKFUL that the Universe provides the longest day of the year just days before this big New Moon so that I am not rushed to clean all that I have to do. The longest day of the year is also my son's birthday, my first-born, and a day I'm thankful to have the most light so that I might have the most possible time to relish in the gift of my Stellan.
The Solstice is also about taking a moment - be still in the Sun as the Sun is still - and to look north, look up, keep your thoughts positive, bask in the heat, feel the burn - interpret however it feels right but know that today is meant to fuel us with the energy we need in order to plant our 'gardens' for this Friday's New Moon.
Because the Solstice is about position, rotation of the Earth, the orbit and the longitudinal position... I think about these things in my meditation. I think about my positive past memories of working in the garden with my mom. I CHOOSE what to remember and recall and playback great, uplifting, supporting memories from my PAST. The Solstice is about midpoint, summer extreme, so you also find balance on this axis and like a teeter totter, you look ahead to the future. I plan to garden with my boys and put into practice with my behaviors and stories, the great memories they will cherish of planting and weeding outside in the Sun with me. The midpoint is about PAST, FUTURE and knowing you are in the PRESENT with perfect balance, perfect hindsight and foresight, and that your position in the Sun matters. Assess and take note.
The New Moon this Friday on the 23rd is considered a Super New Moon rising in Cancer. Blogs galore will help illustrate the further astrological beliefs of this 'SUPER' status, but one thing to note is that it is about detoxing, cleansing, nurturing and transformation. It is about resolving unfinished emotional business, stuff brewing since the last May Super Moon and that will be restored, changed, cleansed and transformed into something inspirational. That is what the moon and starts are 'putting out there', but do you BUY IT? I am a skeptic but I do not subscribe to coincidence and my spirituality relies heavily on trust (like faith) on the signs that I'm given. This Super New Moon is about the recent rise in anxiety and stress and how to use the energy of the Universe to sort it out and pass it on. If there is anything I've prayed for more, it has been specifically to find a way to self-empower and rediscover my inner strength through this new antagonist, ANXIETY. If dancing naked under the full SUPER Moon relieves stress and anxiety, Carlin-bless it, count me in!
You can read on about Solstice, New Moon, Astrology insights for this week on blogs and sites everywhere, but I'm most interested in how YOU exercise the energies of the Universe. Feel free to comment or join me online to share!
